With 65% of its energy already coming from renewables, New Zealand is in a much better starting position than Australia. That said they are now planning an agressive strategy to cut their dependance on fossil fuels even more.

Air NZ is doing some interesting research into biofuels. They have been testing a Boeing 747 on fuel made from soyabean/kerosene blend.
However a return trip from Auckland to LA would consume roughly a square mile of soybeans.
NZ have excellent resources for Hydro, Geothermal and Wind as well.
